This year is moving so quickly! I can't believe it is December already! Just a few more weeks and we will be enjoying a nice long break!
The benchmark for reading is to be reading a level E by the end of November. We will move quickly to a Level F by mid January. It is very important that your child reads every day during the break so that all of their reading skills stay current and they don't lose any gains they have made. It is amazing how quickly we forget those skills! Have you been using Headsprout? This is a great resource for building those reading skills. I will be placing one more Scholastic Book order in 2016. A flyer will go home today and I will place the order on December 6th. December 16th will be an early release day. Students will be dismissed at 1:00. Look for more information regarding our classroom holiday celebration.

The first grade is getting ready for their traditional Thanksgiving Feast! Our entire first grade works to prepare the food for our feast, and then we join together to eat our feast! Our feast will be held on Wednesday, November 23rd at 11:00. Our class will need parent helpers to help prepare our portion of the meal. We will begin our preparations at 10:30. We will also need parents to help serve and set up beginning at 10:45.
Our class is responsible for the fruit salad. We will need grapes, Granny Smith apples, cuties (the small tangerine/mandarin oranges) and cans of whipped cream. Please respond to this blog or email me at [email protected] if you are willing to help us that day or provide some of the fruit for our salad. Just a reminder that tomorrow (Wednesday, October 19th) is our school picture day. Also...with Halloween coming up, I just wanted to suggest that, if possible, our class dress up as a character from a book. If you have already made plans or purchased a costume, please do not change your plans or buy a new costume. I am always looking for ways to introduce literacy into the classroom and it would be great if your child were to dress up as a character from a book (this includes comic books, which includes super heroes!). If you do choose to dress up as a character from a book, it would be fun if they brought the book, or knew the story and they could share that at our Halloween party. October 31st is Nevada Day and our school will have a Nevada Day Assembly that day at 1:15. Following the assembly, around 2:00, we will have our traditional Halloween parade. We will then come to the classroom to make some "spider webs" and share about our character. You are welcome to join us for the parade and the party! Bell Photographers, Inc. will be here on Wednesday, October 19th! A flyer will go home today with your child. If you are interested in purchasing photos, please return the envelope provided by picture day. You can also prepay online. Here is the link: www.bellphoto.com/
Hello First Grade Families!
We have started our Pizza Hut Book It program! We have set a goal of 400 minutes of reading time for the month of October in order to receive a coupon for a free personal pizza! You will reach the 400 minute goal if you read 20 minutes each night for 5 nights during the week. Of course I would say to read EVERY night, but I understand how busy life can get! I am sending a second calendar home to record minutes on, just in case the first one came up missing! We are also at the end of the Box Tops Contest. If you have any to send in, please send them before Thursday, October 12th. Our days here in First Grade move by SOOOO quickly! We are busy working on CVC words and Blends. We are working on reaching the reading goal of reading on a level D and knowing at least 60 sight words. In math we are using a ten frame to add and subtract! We are learning to solve word problems. We are working on base ten concepts. Any counting and grouping you do at home would be very useful. We have been working on our Leader in Me goals. This week we learned more about beginning with the end in mind. What an awesome class I have! They are very thoughtful, considerate students! Have a fantastic weekend! Happy Reading! Mrs. Gowans Today is day 11 of the school year! What a whirlwind of learning and growing! Here are a few things that you will want to put on your calendar!
***Tomorrow***Thursday, September 15th from 5:30 - 7 will be our first family night. We will have a pie theme. Bring the whole family and enjoy stories, games, and PIE! Mr. Foss just might be getting a pie in the face! ***DOGS** This is the second year of our Dads OF Great Students program. The kick off is on September 22nd from 6 - 7, with an explanation of the program at 6:30. Fathers, bring your child and enjoy pizza and soda and check out this awesome program! ***Box Tops for Education*** Our class is collecting Box Tops! We turn these in to the PTA, and they turn them in to receive funds for our school! The school is competing to see which classroom can collect the most! Get your family, friends, and neighbors saving and send them in! ***Scholastic Book Order*** I will be placing the Scholastic order soon! We have been learning about 10 frames, coding, solving word problems, writing, and working on our 7 habits. We have been busy! Please make sure that you and your child read EVERY day! It is so important! Happy Reading! Mrs. Gowans Here we go.....School begins on Monday! It is going to be a fantastic year! Please line up at the number four when the bell rings at 8:25 am on Monday morning. I will greet you there quickly and lead the students inside. This is the same location that you will meet up with your child at the end of the day (3:15).
If you were unable to bring your supplies to our Meet and Greet, you can send them to school with your child. During the first few weeks of school your child might come home exhausted. I know I go home exhausted! For some students, this is the first all-day school experience. The day may seem extra long for a while! Please help your child make this transition to first grade by making certain that they get plenty of rest each night and providing them with a nutritious breakfast each morning. A theme that you will hear throughout this year is to read, read, read with your child. I don't send home much homework other than asking that you read with your child every night for at least 20 minutes. This can be a combination of you reading and your child reading. Please make this a wonderful time of the day, when you can enjoy reading with each other. I look forward to working with each of you this year! Happy Reading! Mrs. Gowans |
